Leonard Luka is een multi-instrumentale artiest, songwriter en producer met Nederlands/ Indonesische roots uit Utrecht. Door zijn soulvolle stem te mengen met uitdagende percussie en elektronische invloeden, creëert hij een eclectische mix van soul, r&b en indiemuziek ook wel bekend onder de naam alternatieve r&b.

Als kind vond Leonard inspiratie in de piano, waarop hij de traditionele jazz-standards naspeelde die door de kleine flat galmden waar hij in opgroeide. Dat leidde tot een studie aan het conservatorium en werk als sessietoetsenist en producent. Toch besloot Leonard een jaar te breken met muziek om te verbinden met zijn roots in Azië en Oceanië. Het gaf hem de inspiratie om terug te keren naar zijn roots en de muziek te maken waarmee hij opgroeide.

Hij deed o.a. de Popronde en So What’s Next Jazzfestival aan voor hij zijn EP ‘MIMICRY’ in 2020 released. Dit trekt de aandacht van 3voor12, NPO Radio 2, 3FM en de single ‘Misdirection’ krijgt zelfs een plekje in de top 1000 beste R&B/Soul nummers allertijden van Sublime FM. Leonard wordt in 2021 genomineerd voor Beste Talent en Beste Song bij de Sublime Awards en komt in 2022 met zijn nieuwe EP ‘MANUSIA’.

‘Geschreven en geproduceerd midden in de lockdowns, is deze EP mijn statement over verlangen, afscheid, eenzaamheid en licht vinden in een donkere tunnel. Daarom heet deze EP ‘MANUSIA’ oftewel ‘Mens’ in het Indonesisch. Een collectie van songs die weerspiegelt wie we zijn maar ook wie we kunnen wórden als we bereid zijn het samen te doen.’

Leonard Luka wants to expose the art in his past and the present, connecting with his mixed roots through multi-layered lyrical and musical impressions. By combining his soulful vibrant voice together with challenging rhythms and electronic influences, he delivers an eclectic mix of alternative r&b/soul tracks wrapped up in 3-part stories.

He is a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and producer with Indonesian/Dutch roots. Growing up in a small apartment, he tried to absorb as many influences as he could. Too shy to sing as a child he found his voice in the piano, playing traditional jazz tunes that echoed through his household. While it lead to studying music and working as a session musician he finally took a one-year break from music to connect with his roots in Asia and Oceania. Deeply inspired he returned to create the music he grew up with, singing everything himself, singing everything himself.

He was seen performing at Popronde, So What’s Next Jazzfestival and internationally acclaimed Sofar Sounds before releasing his three part- EP ‘MIMICRY’ in 2021. This drew attention from national media like 3voor12, NPO Radio2, 3FM with the single ‘Misdirection’ featured in the Top 1000 R&B/Soul songs of all time. In 2022 Leonard got nominated for Best Song and Best Talent Talent at the Sublime Awards and with his new EP ‘MANUSIA’ coming up he is determined to become a household name in the scene.

Leonard about ‘MANUSIA’

‘This EP was written and produced in the middle of the Covid-19 lockdowns. It is my statement about desire, farewells, loneliness and finding light in a dark tunnel. That’s why this EP is called ‘MANUSIA” which translates as ‘Human’ from the Indonesian language. A collection of songs that reflect who we are but also who we can become if we are prepared to walk this road as one.’
