Biography

Leonard Luka wants to expose the art in his past and the present, connecting with his mixed roots through multi-layered lyrical and musical impressions. By combining his soulful vibrant voice together with challenging rhythms and electronic influences, he delivers an eclectic mix of alternative r&b/soul tracks wrapped up in 3-part stories.

The songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and producer with Indonesian/Dutch roots took a one-year break from music to connect with his roots in Asia and Oceania. Deeply inspired he returned to create the music he grew up with, singing everything himself. This resulted in his first EP ‘BOY’ (2017). Leonard himself wrote and produced every song on this debut record. He went on to do an ambitious project with 9 musicians who never played together and recorded 3 new tracks in 48 hours, live on film: Live in 48 Hours (2018) The project gained attention from NPO Radio 2, Sofar Sounds. He performed at So What’s Next Jazzfestival and toured nationally with the Popronde and supported Aeris Roves and Steffen Morrison. His new three part- EP ‘MIMICRY’ is set to release in 2020, premiering on June 26th with the single ‘Kimono’.

ENGLISH

Leonard Luka wants to expose the art in his past and the present, connecting with his mixed roots through multi-layered lyrical and musical impressions. By combining his soulful vibrant voice together with challenging rhythms and electronic influences, he delivers an eclectic mix of alternative r&b/soul tracks wrapped up in 3-part stories.

He is a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and producer with Indonesian/Dutch roots. Growing up in a small apartment, he tried to absorb as many influences as he could. Too shy to sing as a child he found his voice in the piano, playing traditional jazz and soul tunes that echoed through his household. While it lead to studying music and working as a session musician he finally took a one-year break from music to connect with his roots in Asia and Oceania. Deeply inspired he returned to create the music he grew up with, singing everything himself, singing everything himself.

This resulted in his first EP ‘BOY’ (2017). Leonard himself wrote and produced every song on this debut record. He went on to do an ambitious project with 9 musicians who never played together and recorded 3 new tracks in 48 hours, live on film: Live in 48 Hours (2018). The project gained attention from NPO Radio 2, Sofar Sounds. He performed at So What’s Next Jazzfestival and toured nationally with the Popronde and supported Aeris Roves and Steffen Morrison. After a long studio hibernation, his new three part EP ‘MIMICRY’ is set to release in 2020, premiering on June 26th with the single ‘Kimono’.

“As far as I can remember, I adapted most of my childhood to my surroundings in order to survive. In nature, the name for that behavior is Mimicry. While writing the songs for this EP, I had to see through al my adaptions to find the core who who really am. When I peel off those layers, what is left? Or do these layers form the essence of who I am? This EP is about the answers I found.”

Leonard is assisted in the studio by renowned producer Simon Akkermans (known for his work with Binkbeats and Jungle By Night). Together they have have found a way to combine traditional Indonesian percussion, jazz-driven chords and rhythms with modern alternative R&B & indie electronic influences. The result is a unique multi-layered sound that supports Leonard’s taste for poetic themes and soulful melodies.
